Creating a Limited Watercolor Palette for Painting Outside

Limited Daniel Smith Watercolor Palette for Painting Outside

In my most recent episode of Behind the Brush on Patreon, I shared my strategies for creating a custom limited watercolor palette for plein air. These are all Daniel Smith colors chosen from my larger studio selection.

But I just thought this diagram was a fun way to explore it, and was worth sharing here. Have you ever painted your art supplies?

  1. Wow the DS New Gamboge looks *really* orange. (I use another brand’s permanent gamboge that’s PY97/PY153 and a great warm yellow. Their red gold is also great.) I’m experimenting with DS Quin Burnt Orange but the size of the giant tube… plus I’ve got a DS lemon yellow to use up brought me to your site. Thanks for the tip on a DIY Quin Gold! (Am a much bigger fan of the Winsor Newton lemon yellow- they call it Winsor Lemon. Same pigment different hue.)

  2. Thanks for your color palette! I’m slowly learning about mixing colors. I need help getting the skin tones for my daughters and granddaughters faces.
