An Afternoon on the Coast // Watercolor Plein Air

Painting on the coast

Now that the weather is finally shifting towards summer, I’ve been getting outside more often to paint. I always learn so much more painting outside than in the studio.

Reference photos have their use, but learning how to see the colors and values in person trains your eyes more deeply.

That’s why many seasoned artists say plein air painting is so difficult! It’s a completely new skill.

I packed my little Portable Painter and a macaroni pie and set out for an afternoon at Portknockie, a cozy little coastal town in the northeast Highlands.

I'm an independent artist living in Scotland. Always chasing the light, and painting the beautiful highlands.
